Getting Started with Subscriber Management
Let’s create your first subscription type and understand how to use it.
Step 1: Navigate to the Subscriptions Dashboard
Open the Subscriptions dashboard by clicking on the automations section on the left-hand navigation bar and selecting "Subscriptions"
Step 2: Create a New Subscription Type
Click + Create new subscription type in the top-right corner.
In the pop-up, give your subscription a Name (e.g., "Newsletter Opt-In").
Choose the Opt-in Type:
Single Opt-In: Requires only one confirmation from the user.
Double Opt-In: Requires the user to confirm their subscription twice for added security.
Finally, click Save to create the subscription.
Step 3: Utilize the subscription in Journeys
Use your new subscription type in a Journey to collect consent:
Open a Journey and add the Manage Subscriptions node.
Select the subscription type you just created.
This ensures users' consent is stored under the selected opt-in type.
Creating a Segment Using Subscriptions
Want to target a specific group based on opt-ins? Here’s how:
Go to Campaigns and proceed to the Target Audience step.
Click + Condition and choose Opt-in.
Select:
The opt-in type (Single or Double Opt-In).
Optionally, the specific opt-in name (e.g., "Landing Page Subscribers").
Save the segment and proceed with your campaign.
Editing or Archiving a Subscription Type
Choose Edit to modify or Archive to deactivate the subscription.
Note that you can only archive a subscription as long as it is not used in any flow. If you try to archive a subscription and it is still used in a flow, a link to the flow is displayed in the confirmation modal. Once the flow is either deleted or once the subscription is removed from it, the subscription can be archived.
Archived subscriptions cannot be used in Journeys and will not collect a GDPR compliant subscription
Setting up the opt-in flow in Journeys
Set a trigger keyword phrase (e.g. Hey! I want to subscribe to your WhatsApp channel 🙏) and copy the WA.ME link:
The WA.ME link you copied can be used anywhere to guide people into WhatsApp. Once tapped, clicked or scanned the trigger keyword phrase will be automatically pre-filled.
2. Add a welcome message and ask to confirm the opt-in via reply buttons:
3. Set opt-in=YES by;
Connecting the YES reply button to a Manage Subscriber node=Subscribe
Select the correct opt-in
4. Set opt-in=NO by;
a. Connecting the NO reply button to a Manage Subscriber node=Unsubscribe
b. Select the correct opt-in
5. Add any additional questions
6. Store the responses using the Manage Tag node:
Remember: adding Tags off of the additional questions will mean you can use this information to segment your audience in the future.
7. Publish 🚀
Problems publishing your flow?
If you don’t ask a question with two QRBs before collecting an opt-in, you cannot publish your flow as this would be a non-GDPR-compliant opt-in.
To collect GDPR-compliant opt-ins, you need to always give your customers the option not to opt in. The best way to do this is to use a message node with two quick reply buttons (QRBs). After that message, you can then connect two opt-in nodes to the respective QRBs.
